Phoronix: AMD Posts New CPUFreq Driver For CPPC Support With Zen 2 CPUs

AMD Zen 2 CPUs support ACPI's Collaborative Processor Performance Control (CPPC) for tuning the system to energy and/or performance requirements. AMD has now published a new CPUfreq driver for handling their CPPC implementation and the new controls found with their new processors...

Awesome! I hope they work on better Linux support for all of their hardware. Intel's software strategy is just so much better at this point.

Great news, but it is really sad that it won't make it to 5.3 - means we'll have to wait about half a year to see any of this work.

Well that only means AMD gets more time for better code tuning, trial & error is a nice testing ground, but broken code sucks more.

You're not going to benchmark this, are you.. ? :-)

Well, at least it could match next longterm kernel, which would likely be 5.4 ( you know, some users stick with that for 2-6 years )

Unlike Ubuntu non LTS or Fedora

Credit to Intel for what they do, but they have far more resources than AMD does.

To claim it's just money is being dishonest. Intel is more experienced contributing to open source projects and they have a better practice of allowing code to be upstreamed well before hardware is released. This isn't something that is simply solved by throwing money at it, it's a cultural change that has to take place, just look at the Navi code being held back by AMD's legal team. They simply aren't at the same level of maturity when it comes to contributing to linux and open source projects in general.

Newer AGESA/BIOS versions should support CPPC2 on Zen 1 CPUs too, right? It would be interesting to see what kind of difference it makes.

@Michael: are you sure, it's only about Zen 2? The mailing list only mentions >=fam17h (Zen).
