Phoronix: Summing Up The AMD EPYC 7742 2P Performance In One Graphic

If you didn't have a chance since last night to check out our benchmarks of the AMD EPYC 7742 and EPYC 7502 Linux performance, I certainly encourage you to do so. Even if you aren't a server enthusiast, it's incredible to see the engineering achievement of AMD with Zen 2 and how the race is certainly back on in the CPU space. If you are short on time, here's the quick summary of our initial AMD EPYC 7002 benchmark results...

Phoronix, Linux Hardware Reviews, Linux hardware benchmarks, Linux server benchmarks, Linux benchmarking, Desktop Linux, Linux performance, Open Source graphics, Linux How To, Ubuntu benchmarks, Ubuntu hardware, Phoronix Test Suite

      <giggle >....and Intel STILL can't mass produce 10nm cores.

Lovely graphs (unless you work for Intel) - would be nice if the values were sorted by one of the CPUs so it wasn't so zigzaggy.

This new situation will breathe much needed life into the CPU supremacy battle.
In the end we will all benefit from the healthy competition.
Intel can't sit on their asses anymore.

I remember the days when the P4 got sidelined and Intel had to bring their A-game with their "Core" microarchitecture.
          Good times ahead, indeed.

I have a long TODO list / ideas for PTS work, but sadly only so much time in a day between everything going on :/ Eventually I have some more graph improvements planned.

Intel though also has an upper-hand with a more mature and optimized software stack where they may squeeze more performance potential out of their existing chips
Isn't that really just a byword for Intel's benchmark-optimised libraries for things like FFT and BLAS operations who's most prominent users are Intel's marketing team and reviewers in their pocket?

Looking at how much faster off the line the new 2nd gen Epyc is compared to the first generation in terms of server vendor support it definitely looks like they're about to put a decent size dent into Intel's datacenter hegemony. I genuinely hope that what we're about to witness is something akin to what the original Opteron line would have done if it wasn't for Intel paying vendors like Dell billions of dollars to not sell systems with AMD chips*.

(*Not that the original Opteron line did badly, it did so well it eventually forced Dell to renege on their multi-billion deal with Intel, but it could have actually done considerably better)

Uhhhh.....low powered shit cores for cheap thin and light laptops and Chromebooks. NOT for Servers, HPC, Gaming PCs, Video Game Consoles OR GPU's. AND their 7nm Ice Lakes will NOT be released until AT LEAST 2021. That's right.....2021.

In BIG BOY news however Google AND Twitter have announced they are using AMD EPYC Rome chips in their datacenters.

AMD up 14% just on this news today. 83% for the year. Intel.....flat. Wonder why? hint...hint.....Intel can not do 10nm at scale AND be cost competitive. Tick Tock Intel.
