Phoronix: System76 Still Aiming To Be The Apple Of The Linux Space With Software & Hardware

System76 continues doing much more work on software these days as well as expanding their own hardware manufacturing capabilities. This is much more than they did a decade or even several years ago when they were just selling PCs/laptops pre-loaded with Ubuntu. As summed up by System76 founder and CEO, Carl Richell, their end game is much more Apple-esque...

Unless System76 provides decent business class laptops with water spill/spash resistant keyboards,.. System76 is nowhere close to Apple / HP EliteBook / HP ProBook / Lenovo Thinkpad / and-so-on series of professional laptops,..

When in business, broken laptop due to water spill accident, means lost work and lost time until a new laptop is obtained and configured,...

In Linux space, Apple is probably the last thing they want people to associate them with.

Well, yes and docking solution is absent as well, so... but hey, give them some credit, they are becoming a good a viable option for the linux world, when you don't struggle with a hardware. I think they have a good change of raising the bar, someone needs to lead the charge.

I wish they could/would partner up with AMD to make Linux PCs and laptops. It just sucks that damn near every portable option around, regardless of brand, either has just an APU or is Intel with an Nvidia GPU when graphics are necessary.

Where's muh APU laptop that can offload to an AMD GPU?

When are they going to change the name? "Pop!_OS" makes it seem childish.

I hope they move into the ryzen 4000 apu space next year. But looking at Clevo Taiwan's pedestrian line up, that's not likely.

              Btw, don't be Apple. Please.

Wanting to be Apple certainly jives with their refusal to support fwupd on their systems and planning to lock their customers into their own proprietary solution for firmware updates. Good they're so upfront about it, avoids disappointment from customers who don't like being locked inside an ecosystem.

Their laptops still continue to be just Clevo rebranded...
