This is awesome, really looking forward to seeing what’s next for RHEL and CentOS. This is a great initiative.

    Cheers,
    Mike

      Is this just Rawhide rebranded?

This is essentially RHEL Rawhide, which didn't publicly exist before (outside of the beta repos given to customers). We'll now have the following visible development chain:

Fedora (general) > [branch from Fedora] > CentOS Stream > RHEL > CentOS.

        Cheers,
        Mike

No. Rawhide is the development branch of Fedora. Centos Stream is a branch of CentOS. Quite different

The name sounds like a weather phenomenon.

But CentOS tracks RHEL and RHEL picks a Fedora release (more or less) to base itself on - then patches that adfinitum

A rolling release of CentOS makes about as much sense as a rolling release of Debian Stable or Arch LTS. They're two opposing concepts.

Even if that was entirely true, obviously RHEL development will diverge significantly from Fedora development branch over time given the longer release cycles of RHEL but the real picture is not so simple.

Red Hat has a very long time kept an independent branch of RHEL for RHEL development because there are occasionally features that land first in RHEL long before it hits Fedora and occasionally RHEL does something quite different from Fedora (ex: No x86_32 bit support in RHEL 7, GNOME classic mode by default in RHEL 7, No /usr/bin/python by default in RHEL 8) RHEL development isn't simply picking a Fedora release and then patching. There is more cross pollination between Fedora, RHEL and upstream development depending on the timing of the development. CentOS stream is more public availability of the branch that Red Hat has used for a long time internally.

Not necessarily. You can have a stable base and rolling release of the leaf components
