Phoronix: Intel Xeon Gold 5220R + Xeon Gold 6226R Linux Performance

At the end of February Intel launched the Xeon Scalable "Cascade Lake Refresh" processors with a number of more aggressively priced SKUs with different core counts and clock speeds compared to the original Cascade Lake CPUs launched last year. Intel recently sent over the Xeon Gold 5220R and Xeon Gold 6226R processors and we've begun our Linux benchmarks of them. In this article is our initial look at their performance using a near-final build of Ubuntu 20.04 and seeing how the performance stacks up in raw performance and performance-per-dollar against the AMD EPYC competition.

Can we assume that the reason why AMD's Epyc 7742 didn't make it into the comparison is that it is still cheaper and faster than Intel's Xeon 8280?

Nope, just that haven't had the time to re-test it yet due to time constraints... It will be in the next comparison.

As far as I know Intels MKL Library still cripples AMD CPUs by default. You might consider this and do another test of that part on Epyc CPUs:

This is nearly ridiculous. AMD leads performance (adding 7742 to the test) and Intel price/performance.
If someone predicted that 5y ago, I would have been worried about his/her mental health.

AMD should add a ChaCha acceleration primitive. The throughput would be outrageous, and the cost a lot lower than making AES faster.

                What about power consumption?

AMD doesn't expose the CPU package power consumption sensor under Linux so can't compare the CPU power alone and don't have two identical Intel/AMD server platforms to accurate compare AC system power draw.

And it's all because AMD's new CEO is a woman. Even funnier, Lisa Su is the niece of Jen-Hsun Huang, who is the CEO of Nvidia.

NVIDIA’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang is the Uncle of AMD’s CEO Lisa Su Although NVIDIA and AMD are fierce competitors, interestingly NVIDIA’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang is ... Read more
