SSDs have been around for more than a decade. Anything not enabling TRIM by default is insane. Last time MS did that was in Vista, and only because SSDs weren't thing yet.

You'd be surprised how often trim supporting devices automatically get trim disabled due to quirks. Also ZFS came from a world from where trim didn't particularly matter. FreeBSD had an implementation pretty early on because devs were using it on desktops, but other than that for that decade there were more important things to deal with.

Now that ZFS has a great trim solution I don't see that as being a bad thing

Most ZFS arrays are on mechanical drives, what's the point of TRIM on that?

Ubuntu is using it for root filesystem so they assume people will install that on SSDs, and therefore it makes sense to enable TRIM.
