Phoronix: The Failed OUYA Game Console Seeing Work For Mainline Linux Kernel Support

It's been eight years already since the launch of the OUYA game console built atop Android and initially driven up by hype as a new low-cost gaming platform only to turn out to be a commercial failure. Razer bought out OUYA's software assets in 2015 and last year finally shutdown all of the console services. But if you still have the OUYA hardware it soon may start running off the mainline Linux kernel...

    Ou-ya! That's cool!

This would actually probably make for a pretty cool emulation device considering the Tegra GPU is still probably competitive with that of a raspberry pi and you can get a Ouya for basically free nowadays since nobody wants them anymore. Plus: Reduce Reuse Recycle.

Yes. Unfortunately, memory efficiency isn't a profitable area of focus so 1GB of RAM isn't sufficient for a lot of potential uses.

I actually quite like these things. I have about 6 in storage waiting for kernel support like this .

They work pretty well as thin clients or torrent machines.
It is also one of the few "open-ish" android devices you could get with an ethernet port and a decent GPU. Most alternatives like the Pi don't really have GPU acceleration on Android.

Yeah, but for emulation that won't matter, assuming you aren't trying to emulate something too new.
Otherwise, I can't think of much use for this device.

Only a .dts File? Linux already have all drivers?

It should still do pretty decent for emulation. Just don't expect Nintendo switch titles or whatever.

Possibly a tad late for the failed Ouya console (although it does seem to get rave reviews as a Retro game device). Maybe we can add support for the failed Atari VCS console, though?

Should be enough for Kodi too.
