Phoronix: Nintendo Wii U Gamepad Linux Driver Support Still Pursuing Mainline

It's been a half-year since talking about the Wii U gamepad driver that's been in development with mainline ambitions for supporting this wireless gamepad in conjunction with the Nintendo Wii U console. The driver has just been revised to address earlier code review comments, again renewing interest in the effort and possible mainlining in a future kernel version...

There has though been some work towards potentially allowing it to work in the absence of the console.
If I understand that correct, it will soon(tm) be possible to use the WiiU gamepad as a controller on a PC, right? That would be very great, if then decaf would support it, that would be a really nice experience!

Nice work. In an ideal world, when such hardware becomes obsolete or unsupported, companies would release useful documentation to ease these ports and prevent millions of units from going to the landfill. But as it stands, even with its own original firmware, the Wii U is a pretty decent system that is capable of a lot of stuff. If one doesn't care about homebrew, it's still worth it just for outputting Wii games via HDMI so that they can be properly handled by e.g. an mCable/mClassic.

Here's hoping the process of reverse engineering to make it work beyond the console leads to emulating the pad itself; the pad and the console are a set and there were no replacement pads. It's not uncommon for the set to be broken up with the pad lost but the console sold under the presumption that extra pads must have been made available just like any other console controller.

This would be a really nice development platform for steamdeck and waydroid related things assuming you can use it as a peripheral for a more powerful desktop
