Since the link in the article doesn't explain it-- is there some notable difference between an "animated image" using AV1 and an AV1 video file?

The distinction made some difference in the past when tooling for GIFs and videos and flash were difference, and the viewing software (image vs media player) weren't cross compatible.

But that line seems to have disappeared entirely.

Is some form of video decoding hardware acceleration enabled by default on Linux?

I have a Intel HD 620 with Ubuntu Mate 23.04 and in about:support I see:

HARDWARE_VIDEO_DECODING
default available
env blocklisted Blocklisted by gfxInfo

And how about JPEG XL support? It supports animation, too. https://caniuse.com/jpegxl
Compare with https://caniuse.com/?search=av1 which shows AV1 support and AVIF, but not AVIS.

With v113 I can now pop out a #shorts video on youtube to make it fullscreen, before this I couldn't do it. Btw I hate youtube #shorts.
