Phoronix: Microsoft Releases New Code IDE For Linux!

At Microsoft's BUILD Conference today they released Visual Studio Code, a new IDE for developing web and cloud applications. Most interestingly, Visual Studio Code is natively running on Linux!..

Yet another proprietary IDE. It goes without saying that it makes no sense.

Use Geany, Atom, Light Table, Code::Blocks, Eclipse, or PyCharm Community Edition.

Looks a lot like Qt Creator.

You forgot QtCreator, which is an excellent C++ IDE.

I think you are forgetting the most important thing:

"If Microsoft ever does applications for Linux it means I've won." - Linus Torvalds

Sure, they had some stuff before, but this is an actual full program that advertises linux support!

Also good but it is very slow, but OTOH it does have the best C++ highlighting.

I just don't understand why develop it for Linux. It doesn't make any sense to me. All of their software is primarily used for writing Windows code.

It also collects your data, which they put in the small print on the download page.

By installing Visual Studio Code, you agree to the terms and data collection described here

Actually it makes a lot of sense and is quite huge because it makes ASP.NET viable under Linux and OS X, sure they could have just improved monodevelop, but this also shows off the capability of using roslyn to create new IDEs. I might make some use of it...
