It looks like the Oracle layoffs just before the US Labor Day indeed hit the SPARC and Solaris groups hard...

The ideas behind UNIX never depended on a particular hardware. It's sad to see people lose their jobs, especially when it's the people who stood so strongly behind UNIX, but it's not the end of their work, because it definitely lives on with Linux and as such has Linux been conquering anything from wrist watches to super computers. There are plenty of good reasons why one can be proud of Sun.

        Code:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
        Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

My heart goes out to everyone affected, but I'm actually a bit surprised so many were still working on Solaris and SPARC. I haven't used either since 2002. An ex-Sun co-worker got us to buy one Sun server in 2004, but it already used AMD Opterons and ran Linux.

Nothing surprising here. Oracle ices anything that doesn't make them money.

Sounds like a nice opportunity for some Linux companies to pick up more engineers, then!

Frankly Linux is a sorry excuse for a Unix... its poorly integrated, has tons of infighting between developer factions, and in general has become very bloated in many instances.

Frankly it baffles me how developers and engineers see a problem and just think... lets add more code to fix the problem! Then the bandaids fall off and it bleeds out...
