Phoronix: AMDGPU vs. Radeon DRM With Linux 4.14 On GCN 1.0/SI GPUs

It's been a while since last testing the older GCN 1.0 "Southern Islands" graphics cards with the AMDGPU DRM driver rather than the default Radeon DRM driver. Here are some fresh comparison tests using some original GCN graphics cards with the two DRM drivers while pairing it with Mesa 17.4-dev, including Vulkan tests that are made possible by switching over to the AMDGPU Direct Rendering Manager driver.

so once 4.15 lands it will be better to use amdgpu for everything (it isn't now due to no hdmi audio...)

What was the issue with Dawn of War III? Rendering issues or not running at all?

on startup it would show the loading screen and then drop down to the Feral black message box about... Vulkan error -1 or -2, forgot off hand and had meant to upload it for the article but missed out on it before wiping the disk.

Ah, OK. Please do let us know (send an email to [email protected]) if you get anything like that, it's always possible it's an issue on our end and not a driver issue.

              because we need uvd?

Fixing Dawn of War 3 Vulkan is not a requirement for making the switch.
remember with the current radeon drm driver Vulkan doesn't work at all... So this is not a regression. It's a gain...

I've been using HDMI audio with AMDGPU for quite a while. On this very machine (7870k). Is it not working on some chips or something?

It's not working on Polaris, but that's not relevant to the subject of the article. I'm also confused by the statement you quoted.
