Performance:

For testing this 22" widescreen display we had connected it via the included DVI cable to an ATI Radeon X1950PRO using the fglrx display drivers on Fedora 7 Test 2. When connecting this monitor, the fglrx drivers had no problems reading the EDID data and automatically setting the display to its proper 1680 x 1050 resolution.

The Acer AL2223Wd has stated viewing angles of 160 degrees for both horizontal and vertical orientations. We were very pleased with this monitor when viewing the screen at various angles and had no complaints in regards to the viewing abilities. Through the monitor testing we did not come across any dead pixels, or uneven brightness, but there was a bit of backlight bleeding at the top and bottom of the display. This bleeding was not significant but was noticeable especially when the top and bottom regions were darkened.

Through testing the AL2223Wd we had watched DVDs on it using mplayer, played a few rounds of Quake 4 at its 1680 x 1050 16:10 format, and used standard desktop applications within GNOME 2.17.92. While not a selling point for most monitors, the audio quality provided by the dual 1.5 Watt speakers was rather poor. Outside of the integrated speakers and backlight bleeding, we were very pleased with this monitor. Granted it’s important to keep in mind that real-world tests such as these are subjective so it’s always best off to try out the monitor for yourself if possible.
