For the HPCG benchmark the Ampere Altra at 64 cores came out about 5% faster than the m6g.metal Graviton2 64-core instance. With Ampere Altra comprised entirely of physical cores, the performance scaled beautifully from 80 to 160 cores for this HPC benchmark.

John The Ripper was also scaling nicely and core-for-core the Ampere Altra was about 15% faster than the Graviton2 instance.

In tests like LZ4 compression that do not scale so greatly, the 3.3GHz clock frequency of the Ampere Altra Q80-33 allowed it to easily shine over the 2.5GHz clock frequency with Graviton2.
