Initial AMD Ryzen 7 4700U Linux Performance Is Very Good

For this preliminary AMD Ryzen 7 4700U Linux benchmarking, the other mobile processors benchmarked included the Core i7 8550U, Core i7 9750H, Xeon E-2286M, and Core i7 1065G7... Based upon the other laptops I had available in-house with having to buy most of the laptops for Ubuntu Linux.

Right out of the gates, the Ryzen 7 4700U was immediately competing with the Core i7 9750H, the 6 core / 12 thread Coffee Lake part with a 2.6GHz base frequency and 4.5GHz turbo while having a 45 Watt TDP. The Xeon E-2286M meanwhile from the HP ZBook is an eight core / sixteen thread processor with 2.4GHz base frequency and 5.0GHz turbo for a 45 Watt TDP.

The Ryzen 7 4700U with its eight cores and 2.0GHz base clock with 4.1GHz boost clock off just a 15 Watt TDP was impressive compared to the likes of the i7-9750H and E-2286M. The 4700U also slaughtered the Core i7 1065G7 Ice Lake performance.

OSPray is developed by Intel and optimized for their microarchitecture, so not much surprise seeing the Intel CPUs being slightly more competitive there.

But even with Intel's Embree ray-tracing kernels, the Ryzen 7 4700U on Ubuntu Linux was still coming ahead of the i7-9750H.
