Clear Linux Can Run On AMD's EPYC Platform With Competitive Performance
As part of our ongoing AMD EPYC Linux benchmarking, I've been working this week on a cross-distribution GNU/Linux comparison followed by some BSD testing... Of course, I couldn't help but to see if Intel's performance-oriented Clear Linux distribution would run on the AMD EPYC server.
It shouldn't come as too much surprise considering Intel's Clear Linux distribution does work on Ryzen / Threadripper hardware too, but sure enough in no time the AMD EPYC 7601 + TYAN Transport SX TN70A-B8026 2U server was running Clear Linux, albeit not officially supported:
And while Clear Linux is obviously optimized for Intel's CPU models, the performance of Clear Linux on EPYC is still pretty competitive:
It's really a pity that more Linux distributions are not focusing on better out-of-the-box performance by shipping packages making use of function multi-versioning (FMV), etc.
The complete AMD EPYC Linux distribution comparison with all of the many benchmark results in full should be complete by early next week.
Ongoing AMD EPYC test requests can be made in our forums or via Twitter; of course, priority given to our premium supporters in honoring test requests. Some additional EPYC CPU model samples should also be arriving soon.
