With the DNF package manager working out well on recent Fedora releases, Yum could soon see retirement on the Fedora front.

Yum, of course, is still widely used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 but on the Fedora side, they are looking at formally retiring yum come Fedora 28~29.

There's a new thread on the Fedora developers' list about retiring Yum. It's looking like for the Fedora 28 or 29 cycles is where Yum might be removed with DNF providing the same capabilities. Fedora is also working towards support for "rich dependencies", which are unsupported by Yum, so at that point Yum will stop working anyways on Fedora systems.

The mailing list thread so far has yielded a few differences between Yum and DNF still to be addressed, but it looks like it could be sunset in 2018.
