The GNOME team has firmed up the release schedule for the in-development GNOME 3.28 desktop environment.

GNOME 3.28.0 is expected to be released on 14 March 2018, which many in the tech/mathematics community celebrate each year as Pi day.

In order for the GNOME 3.28.0 release to happen as planned, the beta release is scheduled for 7 February, the release candidate for 7 March, and the usual multiple development milestones prior to those targets. The first GNOME 3.27.1 development release is set to happen next week.

The ratified GNOME 3.28 schedule can be found via the GNOME Wiki.

GNOME 3.28 is expected to offer more Wayland improvements, continued work towards GTK4, a new GNOME 3 application for showing system usage/resources and basically a replacement for gnome-system-monitor, a new sharing framework making use of Portals, a new on-screen keyboard, and other enhancements. There will also likely be lots of mobile/convergence work given the hype currently around the Librem 5 smartphone that may ship with GNOME Shell.

Stay tuned to Phoronix for more information as GNOME 3.28 is developed.
