KDE Plasma 5 Is Almost Ready For FreeBSD Ports
More than three years after the initial release of KDE Plasma 5 for Linux, the support on FreeBSD is getting into shape.
KDE contributor Adriaan de Groot who has been leading the charge for getting the KDE packages working well on FreeBSD has mentioned he's now finally switched his FreeBSD desktop machine to Plasma 5.
This marks it being close to getting Plasma 5 added to the FreeBSD ports tree to make it easy for those wanting to run Plasma 5 on the FreeBSD desktop.
Some KDE Applications are already within Ports while other applications still need to be brought over, but there are some headaches surrounding translations and Baloo with KDE4 and "KDE5" not happily coexisting together. As well, there are some Intel + KDE graphics issues if using FreeBSD 12-CURRENT but NVIDIA graphics are working out well.
The KDE FreeBSD team is hoping to have the packages in the official ports tree for 2017Q4 while the adventurous folks right now can try out Area 51 for the bleeding-edge packages.
