Going back to last December System76 had been teasing a new Pangolin laptop that would be AMD powered. Finally their new laptop has launched with Ryzen 4000 series mobile processors and making use of the integrated Radeon graphics.

The new Pangolin "pang10" model features the choice of the Ryzen 5 4500U or Ryzen 7 4700U "Renoir" processors with integrated Radeon graphics. The Pangolin features a 1080p 15.6-inch display, up to 64GB of RAM, and one M.2 SSD. The new AMD-powered Pangolin weighs 1.65kg and measures in at 36 x 23.9 x 1.99 cm.

All-AMD laptops have been quite desirable by Linux users thanks to the fully open-source graphics stack and many users wanting to avoid NVIDIA graphics due to needing the proprietary driver there for any level of support. On the CPU side, AMD Ryzen 4000 series have been performing exceptionally well and strong competition to Intel. Though launching this Ryzen 4000 series notebook at the end of Q1'2021 is a bit unfortunate with other Renoir notebooks being available now for a year. The Ryzen 5000 series has already launched albeit in short supply. Just today as well AMD announced the Ryzen PRO 5000 series mobile offerings. There is a short supply and not yet wide availability of these new Ryzen 5000 series notebooks but they will hopefully become more broadly available in Q2. (I've been looking every day for any Ryzen 5000 series laptops for Linux benchmarking to no luck yet.)

The AMD Ryzen 4000 series mobile support on Linux is quite stable at this point and has been so for about one year. See my past Ryzen 5 4500U and Ryzen 7 4700U articles in having these Renoir processors under some Lenovo laptops. I continue running new benchmarks as well on those parts which can be found via OpenBenchmarking.org or the individual listings here and here.

Pricing on the System76 Pangolin "Pang10" starts out at $849 USD for the Ryzen 5 4500U model or the Ryzen 7 4700U model starting out at $1048 USD. More details on this AMD-powered Linux laptop from System76.com.
