It's been a while since last having anything to report on with VLC with the VLC 3.0 release still not available, but thanks to this year's Google Summer of Code, there was an interesting project around working on 3D format support.

Mohammed Huzaifa is the student developer who spent the summer working on 3D support for libVLC.

The student added core playback support for tagged 3D files. He was able to add playback support for stereoscopic 3D and 360 files, side-by-side output for 2D files, and "cardboard" output support for VR viewing of 3D content.

The work hasn't yet been merged to master, but if you have 3D content and capable hardware, you can try out the code via this Git branch. Interesting summer work.

The other VideoLAN/VLC GSoC 2017 projects can be found here.

I believe this also marks the end of GSoC '17 coverage for the summer projects I've been monitoring. If I missed any other interesting GSoC projects that were a success and worthy of a shout out, let me know!
