Wine has long been working on its Direct3D 11 support, but it's not quite ready for major Windows games with the upcoming Wine 2.0 release. With some work that didn't make the cut for Wine 2.0, Blizzard's Overwatch game appears to be running well.

WWN 404 was issued today and as part of this edition of the World Wine News they mentioned the ongoing D3D11 support and some Overwatch-benefiting work that's been going on for the past month.

The Overwatch patches aren't exclusively about D3D11 work but also include some other necessary changes to allow this popular Windows game to run on the Linux desktop. The patches are now in Wine Git but not yet in a released version and won't be making the cut for Wine 2.0 due to the feature freeze. WWN 404 also talks of other OpenGL and graphics improvements being made.

Developer Andrew Wesie posted this screenshot of Overwatch on Linux:

Overwatch is a multi-player FPS game developed by Blizzard and originally released this past May for Windows / PS4 / Xbox One. The latest Wine Git can be cloned here. While the work isn't in Wine 2.0, at least there are many other exciting features in Wine 2.0 when it's released in the weeks ahead.
