AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X & 2970WX Linux Performance Benchmarks
When running the 7-Zip benchmark with the Ubuntu 18.10 on Linux 4.19, the Core i9 7960X / 7980XE now had a small advantage over the Threadripper 2990WX. But as far as the new parts go, the Threadripper 2920X was matching the i9-7900X and the 2970WX was coming in just a small distance behind the 2990WX.
On a performance-per-Watt basis, the Intel CPUs were still leading but the Threadripper processors did offer better performance-per-Watt compared to the Ryzen 7 2700X.
With the Stockfish chess benchmark is one of the real-world tests where the 2990WX blows the 7980XE out of the water and that is also the case with the 2970WX where it had an 18% performance advantage and still costs less. The 2920X also was 16% faster than the i9-7900X.
With the strong performance in Stockfish, the performance-per-Watt in these tests are comparable between the latest Intel HEDT parts and AMD Threadripper.
The asmFish chess benchmark written in Assembly also performed very well on the Threadripper processors.
