KDE Plasma, GNOME Shell, Xfce, LXQt & MATE Linux Gaming Benchmarks, Including X.Org/Wayland

Total War: Warhammer II did play fine with the Wayland-based sessions and with similar performance though was worth pointing out GNOME Shell with the Mutter Wayland compositor led to higher peak frame-times in both of the game tests run.

When running the Xonotic open-source game, the Wayland-based sessions for both GNOME Shell and KDE Plasma were faster than the X.Org sessions though that ended up being similar performance to Xfce and MATE.

So for the premium members that had been wondering how the Linux gaming desktop performance situation was for EOY2018, hopefully these numbers were of some assistance. There still are some issues with the Wayland-based KDE/GNOME sessions but overall in much better standing than we've seen going back further in the past. There also was less variation between the desktops on the X.Org Server 1.20.3 release than our results going back a year or two ago.
