Unigine Valley at 3840 x 2160 had the GTX 970 coming in with a 23 FPS average while the GTX 980 was at 25 FPS and the R9 290 at 19 FPS with using the proprietary Linux graphics drivers.

With the Xonotic first person shooter is where AMD does better than NVIDIA's current Linux graphics driver, but the next Xonotic release has some OpenGL improvements that should allow it to run better optimized on NVIDIA hardware. Even so, with the current Xonotic 0.7 release the GTX 970 was running at roughly the same speed as the Radeon R9 290.
