Playing With Solaris In 2015

X.Org Server 1.14.5 runs on Solaris 11.2. While some developers have toyed in the early stages of porting Wayland to BSD, I haven't heard of any plans to port Wayland to Solaris, but then again the desktop isn't a big focus of Solaris or for Oracle's enterprise wares.

The Intel open-source graphics stack for the Ivy Bridge HD Graphics 4000 was working out fine on Solaris 11.2 for this particular system. Oracle ported the Intel DRM driver from the Linux kernel to Solaris and with the 11.2 release for the user-space stack they were running Mesa 9.0.3.

The Solaris package manager works fine for its purposes with not needing a full-featured "app store" for Solaris.

The other Ivy Bridge era hardware seemed to be running fine on Solaris 11.2, but too bad the high-end Intel Xeon Haswell server wasn't playing nicely with 11.2.
