Tonga AMDGPU Performance On Ubuntu 16.04 Has 80~90%+ Performance Of Catalyst
Lastly are the synthetic GpuTest OpenGL results.
These synthetic OpenGL benchmark results were a wash and ranged from the AMDGPU-based stack competing with Catalyst to losing out by a long shot.
Overall, the Radeon R9 285 Tonga graphics card is performing quite well on the latest open-source driver code (Linux 4.5 DRM with re-clocking and Mesa 11.2). In a few tests like DiRT Showdown and Xonotic with minimum image quality settings, AMDGPU+RadeonSI was faster than Catalyst/fglrx on Ubuntu 14.04 while in the other tests this Tonga AMDGPU setup was commonly 80~90% the speed of Catalyst. The performance is going quite good and hopefully in the months ahead the RadeonSI Gallium3D driver will be closer to OpenGL 4.5 than OpenGL 4.1 as is the current supported version, closer to supporting OpenCL 2.0, and other remaining Catalyst-only features like OverDrive and CrossFire being tackled. The hybrid driver stack is also coming in the months ahead and will be fun to see how its performance compares to RadeonSI Gallium3D.
