With Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was a rare game where Unity actually came in last place, but it wasn't hugely different from the MATE/Xfce performance and just frames behind the others. The difference also didn't come down to risking the game being playable on Ubuntu Linux or not.

With the rather light Dota 2 game, there was a bit of fluctuation in the results, but again not a huge difference given the variance between the test runs in this particular case.

When looking at the Vulkan performance, this I believe is the first time we've tried Vulkan between different desktop environments on Linux. The biggest impact of our Linux gaming tests in this desktop comparison was Dota 2 with Vulkan. LXDE and Openbox that are running without a compositor had saw the greatest performance over the other composited Linux desktop options.

With ET Legacy and using its OpenGL 3 renderer, the performance was virtually unchanged.
