Core i5 6600K "Skylake" Isn't Running Into Any Troubles On Ubuntu 15.04

As a quick update to Intel Core i5 6600K Skylake CPU Arrives: What Linux Tests Would You Like To See?, this brand new processor is playing nicely on Ubuntu Linux.

Earlier this summer when testing Intel's Broadwell Core i7 5775C socketed processor on Linux, I was running into issues on Ubuntu Linux that I didn't encounter with a Broadwell NUC nor any Broadwell ultrabooks. I found a partial workaround but the easiest solution was switching over to Fedora. While similar kernels were used, Fedora for whatever reason didn't run into any stability issues with the i7-5775C Broadwell.

The good news for the i5-6600K Skylake (and presumably the i7-6700K too, but waiting to test that model) is these newer processors do play happily on Ubuntu 15.04. Even Ubuntu 15.04 with the stock Linux 3.19 kernel and Mesa 10.5.2 is running fine for Skylake. In the few days I've been testing thus far, there are no issues like what was encountered for Broadwell on Ubuntu.

As soon as tomorrow I should start the flow of initial Intel Skylake Linux benchmarks looking at the CPU performance, comparing the new HD Graphics compared to different solutions on Linux, seeing the performance between Ubuntu and Fedora each with different kernel revisions, etc. To suggest your own tests, see the earlier article about how to be most effective in promoting Linux hardware testing -- a.k.a. by joining Phoronix Premium.
