OpenELEC 4.2 Works To Improve The Linux HTPC/Multimedia Experience

A new release of OpenELEC is out for the Linux distribution designed around XBMC (now known as Kodi) for carrying out multimedia tasks with an easy-to-setup operating system.

OpenELEC 4.2 is the new release and its riding off the Linux 3.16 kernel, Mesa 10.3, LLVM 3.5, and X.Org Server 1.16. If these major package updates aren't enough to get you excited, OpenELEC 4.2 also features the latest NVIDIA 340 proprietary driver, systemd 216, and XBMC 13.2 Gotham. OpenELEC also switched from using eglibc as its C library to now using mainline glibc. There's also now support for nss-mdns, a new MMC/SD card driver for the Raspberry Pi, and the Intel P-State CPU scaling driver is now used by default on modern Intel platforms.

More information on yesterday's OpenELEC 4.2.0 release can be found via OpenELEC.tv. Developers are already working towards OpenELEC 5.0 -- with OpenELEC 4.2 serving as its basis -- that will be powered by XMBC/Kodi 14. OpenELEC 5.0 is expected by the end of 2014.
