Running FFTW in the cloud didn't end up being too compelling with the test not scaling out to capture the full potential. With the current-generation Amazon Cloud mostly built around Intel Xeon v3 CPUs, the higher-clocked desktop CPUs were fairing better in this particular test.

John The Ripper with its OpenMP support for multi-threading allowed the Amazon EC2 cloud to be much more competitive and show its potential more accurately.

GraphicsMagick also makes use of OpenMP, but it doesn't scale nearly as well as John The Ripper or other heavily threaded tests, so the EC2 results were a wash.
