Tweaking Ubuntu 17.10 To Try To Run Like Clear Linux
Clear Linux was faster for its MP3 and FLAC audio encoding tests even when Ubuntu was pushed into this basic optimized state.
Clear Linux was much faster in the R benchmark. Again, the compiler flags wouldn't make a difference here anyways, but each test was run in all configurations, at least confirming virtually no "noise" in the results.
Using the Clear Linux optimized kernel configuration on Ubuntu did lead to a much quicker build time... Not too surprising as a stock Ubuntu x86_64 Linux kernel is usually about 50MB while the generated kernel from Clear Linux's config file came in at 20MB. It's much leaner and sticking to hardware of the past few years. But even with the kernel upgrade, Clear Linux was still booting in nearly half the time of Ubuntu.
Clear also led still in the Tensorflow performance with the Ubuntu 17.10 tweaks not helping out this test profile.
