Using all recent Dell XPS models also make for sane power comparisons and obviously sticking to the same brightness levels, fully charged battery when beginning the tests due to the AC power monitoring, etc. All three Dell XPS laptops were running Intel's performance-optimized Clear Linux with the Linux 5.3 kernel. (Due to the rolling-release nature of Clear Linux there were some slight version differences over the time period of benchmarking, but nothing significant.)

Beyond running a variety of CPU benchmarks with the Phoronix Test Suite it was also monitoring the CPU and system temperatures as well as interfacing with a WattsUp Pro for recording the AC power consumption in real-time.

This article is looking solely at the performance under a wide variety of Linux CPU workloads. For those interested in the Gen11 Ice Lake graphics, more of those graphics benchmarks will be coming out in their own articles shortly.
