macOS 10.13 vs. Windows 10 vs. Clear/Fedora/openSUSE/Ubuntu Linux Benchmarks

With the BLAKE2 crypto benchmark, macOS 10.13.4 was the fastest on the 2016 MacBook Pro followed by Windows and then the Linux distributions. Ubuntu 18.04 was the slowest of the distributions tested.

First up was the MAFFT molecular biology benchmark where macOS 10.13.4 came in slower than the Linux distributions while Windows 10 WSL was a little bit slower than that, but for this program there wasn't a native Windows build for testing.

Moving onto the Go systems programming language benchmarks, the macOS and Windows performance was intermixed with the Linux results. Clear Linux was the fastest while Ubuntu 18.04 was the fastest in the Go JSON parsing test case. Windows 10 WSL was doing well since this test case isn't I/O bound while the native Windows 10 Pro performance was right in line with macOS High Sierra.

With the Golang build test, WSL was much slower than the rest due to the I/O being very slow still on WSL. Clear Linux again was the fastest with Ubuntu 18.04 being the slowest of the tested Linux distributions albeit still faster than Windows/macOS in this case.

The results were roughly similar with the Go garbage collection performance except for Ubuntu 18.04 now running slower than Windows 10 Pro / WSL.
