ASUS VH236 LCD Monitor

On-Screen Display:

The ASUS OSD for the ASUS VH236 series consists of menus for Splendid, Image, Color, Input Select, and System Setup. ASUS Splendid on this monitor allows adjusting between different display modes -- scenery, standard, theater, game, and night view. The image settings on this monitor include brightness, contrast, sharpness, saturation, ASCR, and Overdrive. The color temperature and skin tone for the VH236 can also be tweaked.

Subjective Evaluation:

For testing out this monitor we connected it to a system using an AMD Radeon HD 4890 1GB graphics card with the Catalyst 9.5 driver on Ubuntu Linux 9.04. We had tested the DVI and HDMI interfaces. With the monitor's EDID, the graphics card properly mode-set to 1920 x 1080 and the monitor string (ASUS VH236H) was properly parsed out as well. This 23-inch monitor ran into no Linux problems or required quirk handling like some other monitors on the market with buggy Extended Display Identification Data.

We had the ASUS VH236H monitor for a short period, but we had tested it out when using standard Ubuntu Linux desktop applications on GNOME, played back videos in Totem, ran a few different games, and ran some graphics benchmarks via the Phoronix Test Suite. Throughout our testing we were pleased with the monitor and had not found any dead pixels, ghosting, or other imperfections. The colors were vibrant, the pictures were very clear, and the viewing angels were acceptable. The pre-set Splendid video modes were also nice to switch between depending upon the game/application.
