AMD EPYC 9684X Genoa-X Provides Incredible HPC Performance
The ASKAP benchmark is another case where Milan-X and now Genoa-X deliver phenomenal uplift thanks to AMD 3D V-Cache. With the Xeon Max 9480 in HBM-only mode there is enough positive uplift that it then surpasses in some runs the Xeon Platinum 8490H that sports extra cores, but still not enough to outperform the top-end current-generation AMD parts.
Incompact3D saw nice uplift with the EPYC 9684X Genoa-X processor over Genoa but Intel's Xeon Max does very well here and with the X3D-benchmarking input was able to run in HBM-only mode too. With that HBM-only mode, the flagship Xeon Max 9480 2P was able to outperform the EPYC 9684X 2P even when in the 400W power determinism mode.
Xeon Max 9480 CPUs here also led while having lower combined power consumption than the 9684X processors.
But in other Incompact3D work files, the Xeon Max CPUs came in behind Genoa-X. The Xeon Max performance can be highly contingent depending upon the memory use of the given workload.
HeFFTe was loving the performance provided by Genoa-X. HeFFTe also saw some nice boosts in performance with the Xeon Max 9480 processors in HBM-only mode but ultimately that uplift couldn't outpace the higher core count EPYC Genoa(X) processors.
