AMD EPYC 9684X Genoa-X Provides Incredible HPC Performance
With RELION there was very nice improvement in performance going from the Xeon Max caching mode to HBM-only, but ultimately that only allowed the Xeon Max 9480 processors to align with the EPYC Genoa~Bergamo performance. AMD EPYC Genoa-X easily ran much faster.
From Milan-X to Genoa-X is an incredible generational improvement thanks to the larger 3D V-Cache, AVX-512, 12 channels of DDR5 memory, and the other Zen 4 enhancements. Genoa-X remains very competitive too when it comes to the CPU performance-per-Watt. With this algebraic multi-grid solver the Xeon Max 9480 2P managed to take up another win when functioning in HBM-only mode.
With the default problem set size for HPCG, the Xeon Max 9480 2P processors were able to outperform the EPYC 9684X Genoa-X processors...
But at the larger HPCG problem sizes, the Xeon Max 9468 with just 64GB of HBM2e per 56 cores / 112 threads was not enough to successfully run the upstream HPCG benchmark. In the Xeon Max 9480 2P HBM-caching mode, the SPR HBM2e began to fall behind the 60-core Xeon Platinum 8490H processors and the EPYC 9684X was competing well with the Sapphire Rapids Xeon Platinum 8490H model.
